On 22 May 2017, 23 people were murdered after a nail bomb exploded as people were leaving a concert by the American pop singer Ariana Grande at the Manchester Arena.

The predictable response of hashtags, avatar filters and lighting landmarks up in the colours of the Union Jack occurred, but US President Donald Trump described the terrorists who committed the attack as "losers" in a speech. Members of the British military were deployed to patrol the arena, replacing the police who were on duty.

Katie Hopkins used Twitter to call on Western men to stand up and fight Islam, but was reported to the police.
